Is Pumpout now an “expected” facility in UK Marinas?
That was the subject of a keynote presentation by Karl Sutcliffe (Technical Director of marine sanitation specialists LeeSan) at the 2026 Southampton International Boat Show.
Given on the TYHA (The Yacht Harbour Association) stand at the show, to marina owners and operators, this talk discussed the evolution of Sewage and Greywater pumpout facilities in marinas, their costs, prices and how they now feature in the expectations of both resident and visiting boat owners.
Rather like WIFI, which at one time was something of a “paid for” add on, but which is now expected and taken for granted, the discussion centred around the question of whether berth holders and visitors now assume that pumpout facilities should be available everywhere.
As greater emphasis is constantly being placed on requiring leisure boatowners to become more “eco” aware and responsible, so the need for appropriate facilities has grown. This also suggests that service providers should be playing their part too.
From the marina owner’s standpoint, the general feeling was that a pumpout facility, which used to be viewed as a capital cost, now provides an additional reason for boaters to visit, stay, eat in the restaurant, possibly use the yard services, buy something from the chandlery and add to the positive feeling of the experience as well as the likelihood of a return visit.
LeeSan believes that the future for pumpout systems is automated, contactless, and digitally integrated, abandoning physical tokens and cash keys.
These services will become similar to a land-based EV charging point: tap-and-go with a contactless card, or activated instantly via a smartphone app.
Of course, this also will require the Maria owners to site the system with easy access and ensure that it is well serviced and always available. When offset against the potential benefits this seems like something of a “no brainer”!
Karl Sutcliffe comments: “For a long time now I have believed that there is a better, more modern and more effective way of providing this essential service to our Marina operator customers and their boat owner market. It was extremely heartening to receive such positive feedback at my TYHA presentation and to discover that so many commercial sites are thinking along the same lines. I believe that, in the coming few years, reliable pumpout facilities will become commonplace for all boat owners”.
